neotoma: Neotoma albigula, the white-throated woodrat! [default icon] (Default)

I saw 4 older white men in red MAGA hats this morning at about 7:15 am while I was getting on the Metro. They were buying Metro cards and needed a Metro employee to explain how to them. None of them were wearing masks and one of them was carrying a length of rope.

When I got off Metro at 7:30 at Rockville, there were about a dozen people buying Metro cards, again mostly older and white, again not wearing masks, and again needing a Metro employee to guide them. I felt bad for the employees, because they have difficult jobs already and a bunch of people demanding service while not obeying the rules about maskwearing is just more grief.

I saw these two groups and was mildly concerned about getting home, because lost, aggressive right-wing protestors are something to be avoided. My commute currently routes home all the way from one end of the Red Line to the other, as it's easier to avoid people on Metro cars than on Metrobuses; I didn't want to take that route home because I didn't know when the Trumpist rally was going to break up and I didn't want to encounter them.

But that all changed when the news broke that the Trumpists had broken into the Capitol. When the news popped up on my phone, my manager sent me home early so that I could make sure to get home before something even more crazy happened.

There was a knot of about 20 Trump rally goers standing like lost sheep at Rockville when I got there -- not only did one of them have a partially rolled up Trump flag, but the majority of them were wearing hunter's orange, either knit caps or hunter's vests. Normally, I'm happy to help lost tourists, but these people I was leaving on their own -- standing in a clump, not in a bus bay or a taxi stop, so who knows what they were waiting for, but whatever it was they weren't in the right place for it.

I took the bus all the way to Wheaton, and then hopped on that to get home. The Metro car smelled like sulfur, which was worrying, but I made it home safe and just get to wait to see what will happen tomorrow.
I made it to Women's March today before the rally started, and lasted about 2.5 hours -- the damp finally got to me.

It was probably the most crowded I've seen the Mall in quite a long time; from 3rd & Independence all the way back to Natural History, and quite possibly beyond, and overflowing Constitution on the north and Independence on the south.

I didn't have a pink pussy-hat, but there were an amazing number of them being worn, in a variety of shades, shapes, and quality of manufacture. There were also more than a few people who decided that cat-ears or cat make-up was also going to get the point across.
Topeka, Kansas has repealed the local domestic violence law -- the city council and mayor claim that it would be better for the state and county courts to handle those cases, instead of Topeka prosecuting them (where domestic battery is only a misdemeanor?!).

So they repealed the local domestic violence law for purely budgetary reasons? :Gah:
Had a wonderful time with [livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedon, [livejournal.com profile] bayleaf, [livejournal.com profile] gblvr and [livejournal.com profile] tricksterquinn who arrived late and unexpectedly. The Front Page is a wonderful place to have a leisurely diner.

I had to field *two* calls from the HR guy at the Old Company during dinner. Thus I have an interview for Thursday for the QC Analyst position now, though I'm going to have to call on Monday and confirm, since he did *not* email as he said he would.

Upon arriving home, I found that my lease will go up 6% if I choose to stay here another year. That's not at all bad, but it does mean I have to start looking for a roommate again -- after I have a confirmed job, though. I think I'll put ads in the Blade this time round.

I also got a 'Grassroots Survey from the Democratic National Committee'. I'm tempted to fill it out by writing my *actual* opinions on it, instead of their multiple choice options, which don't actually reflect what I feel.

For example, question 6 "Do you believe Medicare should be allowed to re-import less expensive drugs from Canada to make prescription medicines more affordable for senior citizens?"

The answer choices are:

'Yes, this will help millions of seniors who struggle to pay for their prescriptions.'
'No, it is too risky as the safety of these drugs can't be guaranteed.'

My actual opinion is 'the Federal Government needs to stop giving the pharmecutical industry a free ride and use its buying power to negotiate a price break, like Canada and most of Europe does.'

At the end, they ask if I want to become a member of the DNC, and if so, how much money will a donate. Uhm... considering that I think the Democrats representatives and senators in Congress have for the most part done a piss-poor job at being the opposition party, *NO*, I don't want to give the DNC money.

Think I should tell them that? I mean, they *asked* for my opinion...
