Last night, I went to the House Jacks concert at Black Rock with
gblvr and her SO. It was *great* fun, and a little bizarre, considering that it was five guys singing with no instruments whatsoever --but you had to keep looking at them to remember that.
One of the band members, Wes Carroll, is an expert on vocal percussion, and is frankly *amazing* with what he can do. His solo piece during the encore was a wonderful drum solo -- sans drums.
Their music is rock, but with a quirky sensibility that sometimes reminds me of They Might be Giants, but they are also a bit like a boy-band, according to
gblvr who is something of an expert.
All songs in mpeg-4 format.
The Bone
Athena
Cereal
Fitchy & Grikko CD, 12 songs, zipped
They were also terribly funny, ad-libbing commentary between songs (especially about how nice the audience was, the Aloha Shirt Quotient, and how we could really go above 'golf clapping'). After intermissions, when they went into an extended bit of 'We Sings Songs We've Never Rehearsed' from audience requests,
gblvr got them to sing "Dancing Queen" by ABBA, which was HILARIOUS and they were pretty good sports about.
If they come back, I'm definitely going to see them again.
PS They do tour in Europe (Germany, maybe elsewhere) and Japan if you're not in the States and like the music.
