I just got a letter for my apartment saying that "Hey, your lease is up soon. Re-up now. By the way, we're increasing your rent by $20, on top of the 6% increase the last time you renewed."

I'm on a six-month lease, because they would not LET me extend it a full year last time. I was out of work and did not have enough in the bank to satisfy them. I'm not making enough *now* to be comfortable with any increase.

This sucks, goddamnit.

can you threaten to move out if they up the lease? I wouldn't do it unless you can back it up, but it might work...

Not easily, which is the problem. You know what the DC housing market is like -- and it is near impossible to find a new place when carless.

I'm going to have to go talk to them, and find out if they were lying to me about the whole "we'll just renew your lease in six month with nothing going up..."
