I had a "what? WHAT?" start to the weekend on Saturday. I lost the knitting out of my backpack, the store was out of this week's bus pass, and the stylist dyed my hair burgundy when I asked for violet. I did manage to find the knitting by backtracking my path three hours later, and wasn't too late for my plans with
sanj.
I had planned to show her the last three Sharpe's Rifles episodes, the ones with Alexis Denisof playing one of the antagonists -- basically playing Wesley Wyndham-Pryce at his worst -- a Napoleonic Wars era Life Guards officer. However, I did want her to get some context, so I brought along my collection of the first five episodes as well.
So I showed Sanj Sharpe's Rifles, the first episode. I got her hooked! Of course, it doesn't hurt that it's a pretty rolicking story with some very pretty and engaging actors in it.
Sanj totally missed Rothschild in his disguise, but really enjoyed the reveal as the end. She did call that Harper would wind up Sharpe's best friend. And she agreed with me that the show is pretty amazing in that it managed to make Sean Bean look short -- he's playing against several taller actors, and often positioned downhill of them.
Sanj's reaction to Teresa was in agreement with my feelings. We want her clothes, and we want her. The lovely thing about Sharpe and his falling for women who can kick his butt, is that I get objects for fan-lust that way. And with the dynamics between off-kilter from the standard trope -- Teresa is smarter, higher ranked, more independant than he is, and spends much of her time on a horse while he walks everywhere -- it's a lovely relationship that is very fun to watch.
Sanj really had fun with the scene when the Rifles get into the church. Hagman making Perkins take off his hat got a chuckle, but it was Harper genuflecting that really got to her. It is a nice bit of acting -- of which there are many many occurances in the show.
Also, we made fun of how there are just scenes that are straight from romance novel covers in this series. Also things that look like fan art -- noteable the cover for Sharpe's Company.
It was fun picking out Hogwarts Houses for the characters. Sharpe is obviously a Gryffindor -- one with a chip on his shoulder and lots of bad-ass skills. Harper is also a Gryffindor, one not quite as strict about honor as Sharpe, but nice. Sanj liked Perkins, and said he was a baby Gryff. Hagman is obviously a Hufflepuff, and Tongue might be one too. Harris is Ravenclaw -- and one Sanj likes because "geeks are hot", even if they are wastrel literature buffs. Cooper is really bad at being a Slytherin, but that's what he is. Hogan is very good at the same, and makes an ally of Sharpe much of the time.
Sharpe's Eagle was the next up, and very delightful. It's got more of how Sharpe turns into an absolute lamb around women -- Sanj says puppy, but some sort of cute fluffy harmless animal, anyway. And he so does -- someone drilled into him to be respectful to women very young, as it is practically a spinal reflex.
ellen_fremedon came home half-way through Sharpe's Eagle which we paused long enough for her to get comfortable and sit down to watch the end with us. Amusingly, her comment was "Wow..." as we started up again -- the scene is when Sharpe gets gazetted to captain, and has that full length shot of Sean Bean from the back. Yes, we know; down, girl.
We were continuing to riff on how totally a Gryffindor Sharpe is, and how he just can't deal with the Slytherins around him. I mentioned that he was fairly cute in a scruffy, underfed puppy sort of way: "I'd take him home and feed him".
"I wouldn't feed him" was the retort.
Yes, well, that the difference between me and sanj and ellen. I like men as friends, but they're never going to get beyond the stage of talking dogs -- I'll feed them and play with them, and maybe even scratch their ears, and certainly admire how they're gorgeous in their physicality, but it's not going to go further than that.
So we finished watching with much squee and good will. Hopefully I'll get to show them the third, fourth and fifth episodes soon.
This morning, I went with sanj to her church choir sing, and got to wear my hifu coat. It hits me right about the knees, and is absolutely gorgeous. We ran into
abka and
denis77and his mom, and had brunch as Cafe Deluxe. My french toast was good, but their potatoes were cold, and so I think the consensus was it's a good place for dinner, but not brunch.
Afterwards, Sanj helped me find some gorgeous shoes at Comfort One Shoes -- El NaturaLista brand. I bought Iggdrasil N091 shoe with its cute little frog, but I want the Vedoira N570 clog , Iggdrasil N090 clog and maybe even the Iggdrasil N096.
