I'm working a temp gig, that's said to be 3 months and might stretch to 6.

However, the supervisor for the *other* section, who work in the space I work in, suggested I apply for a job in her section today. I told her I couldn't, because the temp company has rules about being hired by the contractor without going through them, and that it would violate the agreement I'd signed with them.

She dismissed that, in "well, you'd be working for me, not F----". I had to point out to her that it would be the *company* hiring me, no matter who my supervisor turned out to be.

She has some weird internal-office-politics thing going on with my direct supervisor and his supervisor. It's gotten to the point where she won't let them use the label printer because it was bought with her project's money.

Her inquistiveness doesn't bother me, since I'm a bit nosy myself. It's the petty biting that does, because the job only has so much space and having a fight in it just isn't comfortable, no matter how low-key and silent the dispute.

I'm not wholy on my supervisor's side either, because he vents to me, and really, I'm just here to work. I don't want to get involved in office politics. The fact that she's the only other woman in this office space -- we're a lot of techs, and she's the supervisor for everyone *but* me and my supervisor -- just makes the dynamics suspicious.

I am not at all impressed that she tried to poach me, either. I worked here about 10 weeks ago. If she wanted me any time during the interval, all she had to do was call up the temp agency and ask for me. Now that I'm back, an offer of employment doesn't impress me so much when it feels like she wants what she sees someone else appreciating.

I could do better than this place, but it will take time. I could work here for a year two as a permanent employee, but it will take better wages. I could (and probably will) work here for six months, and then leave to find somewhere else.

Yurgh! You did the right thing. Probably being a temp with that group is safer, since you can plead 'nonpolitical' and keep well out of it. Hang in there! :)

Actually, no, you did not turn a job.

Nothing was on paper, and as you said, you cannot break your agreement with the temp agency. ( Actually, you can- the temp agency would wind up billing the company for up to 10% of your wages, plus a finders fee, plus whatever they were supposed to be paid. But that's blood.)

Be open, be courteous, but hey stay out of the fray.

Oh, I'm definitely staying out of the way. It seems like a very stupid fight, but I'm arriving in Act 4 of 5, as far as I can tell, so I'd like to keep out it.

I'm going to work on finding a better, more stable job, but it's taking forever.
