I think it might have been a juvenile blue jay. Unfortunately, bird identification isn't my best skill, and most of my experience is with southwestern birds anyway.
I'll agree with you, that looks like a juvenile blue jay to me, too. Our blue jays love peanuts, they squirrel them away for the winter. Why not tempt him back with some nuts?
Over here, we get this blue jay in our apricot tree (right outside the kitchen window) that squawks at us like he's scolding us whenever we go by the window. We named him Squawkus Maximus. :) If the window weren't screened, I'd try to get a pic of him, but as it stands, it wouldn't come out very good.
