Maori culture reference recommendations?

Those of you who know anything about Maori culture, could you give me recommendations for a good introductory text or two? I'm looking for stuff that covers the pre-contact civilization more than during the colonial or modern periods, but it's all good.

I may have a couple of things Maori, though I don't know whether they fit what you want. Next time you're over, remind me. One's a pretty good dictionary/glossary.

splix gave me a book titled The Maori by Lewis & Forman so that should be available in the US. Very lyrical for a nonfiction book, and a pretty dense read... other than that, I picked up most of what I know in New Zealand, so not much help there <:)
