My Maxtor external hard-drive, the one that I use for storing all my nifty vid files, has sudden gone belly up. Considering I only bought it a few month ago, I am pissed as hell about this, and seriously wondering if there is something defective in the *case* of my computer, since I've had bad floppy, DVD and hard drives now with this thing.

The only good thing seems to be that the drive *should* be under warranty, since I just bought it. Should -- if I can find the receipt and all that.

That is the suck. Last year, in the course of a few months, I had my external fail on my twice and my main computer HD go once. It was enough to make me swear off computers for a while.

Have you been using the OS-approved method for disconnecting the external?

No, because I haven't been disconnecting the external. It's purpose is to be the storage backup and place to shove huge video files until I could get around to burning them on DVD (which I couldn't do for the longest time).

My first thought would be a short in the power supply. My daughter's PC had one a while back that electrified the case and destroyed just about everything in it.
