I went to
ellen_fremedon's and had a lovely time. The vegan lasagna with toum was fantastic, and she'd spatcocked a small turkey as well.
The candied candy roaster squash was wonderful and vegan, as I substituted Earth Balance 'buttery sticks' for actual butter; while it doesn't melt nearly as easily as the real thing, it worked quite well, and the squash was full of cinnamon and nutmeg.
The candy roaster pie was a hit -- I went for the simpler recipe so the only two notes were Mexican vanilla and the taste of the squash itself. I will definitely make it again (given that I have most of the puree left).
Also, I gave
ellen_fremedon a selection of the jams and jars I made over the summer. The sour cherries in syrup with cardamom is excellent with vanilla ice cream. I will have to make that again once sour cherry season roles around, even if it was intended to be a jam (and just didn't set).
I do think I'll plant candy roasters again. They have an amazing flavor and puree up wonderfully after roasting. There was no stringy-ness the way you sometimes get with pumpkins.
Also, I left the 13.5lb candy roaster with
ellen_fremedon and the Vegan Knitter, and can't wait to see what they'll do with it.
