Laid off...

So, just before lunchtime today, I got called into a meeting. When I saw that the HR director was there, I know instantly what was up. Ever since we lost one of our contracts I was expecting them to lay people off, and was looking for other positions inside the company, but no bites.

I've got 6 weeks of severance coming, as soon as I sign the paperwork. I'll start looking for a new job tomorrow, since I'm on the "don't come in, but we'll pay you like your working for the next two weeks" plan. I'll also have to sort out my medical insurance, which will be 'fun'.

I'm so sorry, it's awful that moment when you walk into a "meeting" and know instantly that it's a meeting. It happened to me two years ago almost to the day (the 22nd in my case) and now I'm happier and better employed than I've ever been, so I hope it works out the same for you.

Well, that's awful. I'm glad you've at least got a severance package. (This happened to me a few years ago, I got a much better job with more room for advancement, and I learned that if you just put month and year on your resume for your employment history then you have a bit of a grace period where the HR people who filter out the resumes of the unemployed assume that you're still at your last position. Though this worked out better for me since I lost my job at the beginning of the month and had several weeks of sending out a resume that was technically accurate yet misleading in my favor.)
