So, onto eps 17-8 of Jericho...
The first thing I'm thinking it that if the elementary kids are the ones hunting in town, a) no wonder people are starving and b) they're going to get rabbit starvation.
Bill shows that he is such a weasel-- he has a stunning ability to say things that make the entire situation *worse*, including being the first to say they should stop feeding the refugees (who are only about 50-100 people, in a town of 5000!). Also, the previous Sheriff apparently kept him on the force because he's good at *evictions*, ugh -- being good at scoping out meth labs would have been more savory. Also, where did all these extra deputies come from?
Why does Roger get to stay in town when he's a refugee? Just because was known by the town because he was engaged to Emily -- which shows that the town is being un-compassionate and uncharitable in really appalling ways. Frankly, I blame the writers for just how appalling I'm find the food/resources plot -- they haven't added enough lines about why the town isn't eating the wheat, corn, and sorghum that should have been available (rural Kansas, after all). If there were lines about the crops being too radioactive to eat (though they wouldn't be able to eat rabbits either, if that were the case) and they've shown that Mary is making moonshine for her bar -- if they were really strapped, they'd have destroyed her still, instead of let her turn food into alcohol...
By the second time Bill opened his mouth, I was hoping for him to get punched in the face... thank goodness, the third time he said something, he *did* get punched in the face!
Hawkins keeps spying on his family. Yes, I know he did everything he did to protect them, but I think Darcy did the right thing leaving him the first time round, and I think she did the right thing leaving him again. Deep-cover spies aren't exactly savory, you know...
Dale and Skylar's attempts to recover what they had exchanged for in good faith -- this is why I'm completely frustrated that the town has made no attempt to set up a court system of any sort. It's a *contract* dispute, that because the kids had no possibility of relief in court, turned into horse-theft and robbery .
I like the Reverend tries to stop Mayor Anderson from evicting people -- nice to see someone acting up their ideals on the show. Gray Anderson keeps trying to use weapons he doesn't know how to use and escalating the situation -- he's a terrible leader -- it's like watching incompetence porn. The only person in ep 17 beside the Reverend who showed actual ethics is Jess the med student, who treated Mayor Anderson's gunshot wound in spite of the fact that she was going to be thrown out with the rest of the refugees.
Also, there have been people that froze to death in the winter already -- even if the town doesn't want to open the homes of people who were out of town to the refugees, the homes of those who died already should be available. Of course, it would be more energy efficient to heat the church basement where the refugees were already staying than it would be to open up more houses that need to be heated individually, but who actually pays attention to fuel shortages on this show? No one, which is why they all have cars to drive.
Gail Green's belated attempt to get the town to take in refugees just makes me furious -- no one thought of this *before* that? WTF? How evil and incompetent is this town?
Episode 18 -- Jimmy actually shows that he knows how to be a cop! WOW! Competency!
Also, it takes them to after Thanksgiving to get the classes back up? WTF? They should have had the classes going on, and maybe taking the kids on lots of field trips to help out at farms as needed.
I like that Mimi has the sense to only kill the chicken laying the least eggs. And her "I'm downsizing you" talk to the chicken is *hilarious*.
OMG, are they still hunting in blinds? WTF? Throw out the poaching laws, bait the watering holes with sorghum, and screw the bag limits.
Jake is way too casual with that gun -- his trigger discipline also sucks. But he is sneaky and suspicious and gets the drop on Hawkins. If Hawkins is CIA, him working *inside* the USA is actually illegal -- they're supposed to work with the FBI when they have to work inside the country. The idea of religious fundamentalists, domestic militia and anarchists working together doesn't actually sound that unbelievable to me -- any two of those groups could easily find common ground.
Jericho was chosen for the rally point because by fallout predictions it wouldn't be in the contamination zone, it has salt mines, an untainted water table and plenty of farmland -- yet the town is in danger of starving... in other words, Hawkins was prepared for the stupidity of the townfolk...
Bonnie's boyfriend Sean is a selfish little twit (eating all the sprouts left in the house) -- and the fact that he and Bonnie are sleeping together -- I kind of want to know why she didn't get pregnant, as she's a healthy young woman and the town has probably run out of contraceptives.
I like the interaction between Gail and Johnston this ep -- they're so believable as a married couple. Especially in how they're having a difficult patch in their marriage from the stress.
And oh, finally, someone actually riding horses as transportation! And Bonnie ignoring Mimi when she doesn't want to obey -- she's very good at being a teenage brat.
Hawkins proves that he's actually *competent* at his job and ruthless enough to be a good infiltrator. YEAH! Someone I can actually like! Well, not like, because Hawkins is a shifty bastard, but I definitely respect him.
Ep. 19 -- hey, the plot is picking up again! The shenanigans with New Bern makes for interesting tv, and the characters aren't acting as dumb as they do in the disaster survival plotlines.
Mary was trying to make antiseptic for the Med Center with her still.
Hmm. Gray Anderson trying to keep Skylar from using salt from her half of the mine on the grounds that she's a minor is extremely weasely. Considering he's let her and Dale live without supervision of any sort.
New Bern has border patrols to keep people out -- hmm, they're actually being run by competent people. And have fortified themselves after Ravenwood came through, so they're really twichy and paranoid.
Darcy and Jimmy have a nice friendship -- I kind of adore it. Jimmy is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he's trying hard, and noticed that Darcy's son was drawing disturbing images. He just lets people put him off with reassuring words, when he should pursue his suspicions.
New Bern has a big factory that is the economic center of town -- and the guy saying that Heather and Eric is so obviously lying. And then Jake and Hawkins go to find out why... which goes to a nasty place.
I like that Mimi and Stanley have a fight over Bonnie's attachment to Sean. Mimi has the better solution for how to deal with Sean -- let Bonnie keep her boyfriend until she tires of him, instead of goading Bonnie into some rash teenage over-reaction. Admittedly, Sean isn't too bad for a teenage, but he's kind of terribly obnoxious in a naive self-centered teenager way.
You know, I'd believe that the town was starving if they'd actually had extras who looked gaunt. Russell, from New Bern, looks like he's actually lost weight, but that actor might just have a naturally bony face.
New Bern's inventory of Jericho includes:
Farms: Richmond (150 acres, corn grain, wheat, soybeans, sunflower, on the east side of Jericho) Frederickson (75 acres, corn, wheat), Ella Orchard (90 acres, grain, honey?,), Elis Farm Estates (75 acres, corn wheat). Livestock: Fowl, cattle, swine. and the salt mine.
Okay, those are laughably small farms for Kansas (700 acres on average, people!), and the soy, sunflowers and swine *weren't* on Jericho's Blackboard of Doom. So someone on the writing staff finally did some research about what grows in western Kansas, but they didn't do enough.
I think, however, I'd still be rooting for New Bern, since they're plan of conquering their neighbors actually makes sense, as opposed to Jericho's attempts to be a Hidden Elf Village.
Jimmy gets a confirmed surname! Yes! It's 'Taylor'. Now, if Bill would only get one. Seriously, I find it ridiculous that Bill and Jimmy aren't every called Deputy Surname and Deputy Surname.
Skylar attempts to get herself named an emancipated minor -- so there are still lawyers in town, and when the Mayor won't accept it, Dale asks if the laws don't apply anymore. (Why would they have to file it in Topeka? They'd file it in the county seat.) Ha! About sometime someone brought up that without a court system, contracts and going to lawyers is kind of useless. Of course, Mayor Anderson is kind of useless too.
Gail is still being a bitch about Mary and Eric.
And Jimmy, you're sweet! And trying to bond with Sam over being the son of divorced parents.
Russell trying to get the salt as a means of heading off the war with New Bern... wow, Mayor Andersen has a sheer anti-genius for choosing the worst thing to do.
Constantino is twisting things to his own ends -- I'm not sure if he's just jumping to the worst conclusions possible, or if he's actually a demagogue of the worst sort.
Ep 20 -- Starts with a confrontation over the salt mine with Mayor Anderson being stupid. And oh look -- there's Deputy Bill there to throw gasoline onto the fire by saying something stupid and inflammatory!
Jake is finally being competent and a bit of a hardass -- and wow, New Bern has a *much* bigger jail than Jericho. Him bonding with Eric in the jail cell is sweet.
Dale being pissed at Mayor Anderson interfering with his business deals, and that precipitating a soot out makes so much sense to me. Mayor Andersen is a complete idiot and Deputy Bill needs to be stomped on, often and hard -- at least wait until everyone has medical treatment before you want to arrest them, you twit.
Johnston walking into the office and calming things down immediately shows the difference between competency and incompetency as a leader. He's also got a somewhat sensible plan for retrieving Eric and Jake.
I actually like Maggie the faux-Marine and the way she actually has the nerve to try something risky to get them all out.
Johnston might actually have gotten something sensible out of Constantino, if Constantino wasn't plotting conquest. And if Gray Anderson wasn't such a dishonest dealer as to undermine everyone who might actually make things better at every turn.
Hee. Emily confronting Gail about her behavior towards Mary makes me smile.
Skylar and Dale being left to flail drives me nuts. They're teens. If they're emancipated minors, then they should be treated like adults -- including being allowed to run their own businesses and make legal contracts. If they're not, then they should have been assigned foster parents and actually been taken care of.
Poor Russell keeps trying to cut the crazy shit off at the pass. But neither Anderson or Constantino want to play ball. It might help things if he told Johnston that New Bern is making *mortars*, but I can understand not wanting to actually betray his town.
The interrogation of Eric and Jake by the New Bern deputies -- I'd think police officers would know better than trying to torture out intel. It's establishing a rapport that gets accurate information -- torture just gets what the torture victim thinks you wants to hear. I suppose the scriptwriters are using them as stand-ins in their political metaphor, but it does break down the suspension of disbelief to have so many incompetent cops in one area of Kansas.
Yes! Johnston to the rescue. He's not dumb, which is nice.
Ha, so they are willing to eat horse! Skylar is willing to deal with people who insulted her. Hmm, she might be a decent person after all -- possibly better than Dale, who wanted to raise the price on meat for just the person who insulted her.
Hawkins is a pragmatist, but Jake and Eric are actually loyal to people on their side -- so Maggie has a chance.
Seriously, half the trouble in town is because they elected a pretty incompetent guy as mayor. This show is full of incompetency porn, and it's driving me nuts.

It really would have been better off as a post-apocalypse scifi show instead of a conspiracy thriller set against an apocalypse, you can tell they did the bare minimum of research.
Mimi downsizing the chicken was the best scene in the series.

Oh, a post-apoc SF show was what I wanted -- if they just used the thriller as a plotline, instead of trying to make it the genre.
Poor Mimi didn't sign up for chicken slaughtering when she got her accounting degree!
