The cheesemaker wasn't here today, but that hardly matters as I bought peaches, plums, eggplant, tomatoes, blackberries (sorbet!), leeks, potatoes, and veal sausage. I'm set for the week (and probably more) -- eggplant and tomato pasta, leek-potato-cheese soup, sausage and pierogies -- I will eat quite well.

I still want to hit Whole Foods, because the bread is just as good and noticeably cheaper there (yes, really) and I love their plain challah but I might do that on the way home tomorrow.

I have completed the peach ice cream, and it's firming up in the fridge. I think I'm going to make fruit ice cream all summer, and move to the chocolate ice creams when it gets cooler.

I'm also looking at pasture-fed dairy, in the hopes ofgetting more Omega-3 fatty acids in my diet. I don't like fish in general, so I need to look at other sources -- maybe I should buy purslane at the market next week and make an herb tart. Fruit is all well and good, but I really should eat more greens.

Do you ever get the crazy craving for some breakfast food during the middle of the day?

I just made a batch of pancakes, and ate half of them -- the rest are in the fridge for tomorrow. I love my new big skillet and how fast the gas range cooks things. Seco cultured buttermilk powder is also wonderful. I might actually get through a bottle of maple syrup soon...

Possibly I should be planning a trip to the Penzeys Spices store, since I'm having so much fun cooking things in the new apartment...
The peach ice cream wasn't as successful as the others I've made. I'm not sure what went wrong, as it tasted fine as a base.

The non-homogenized milk might have been a problem, or the fact that some of the peaches I had frozen before using them. Or it might simply be that this particular container isn't as freezer-tight as the others I've used, and thus the ice crystals formed too large and made the ice cream too grainy to be really excellent. I'll know tomorrow when I try the other container that I put up today.

I do think that I need to see about getting some dedicated freezer containers for my homemade ice cream if I'm going to keep making it... anyone have any suggestions for good ice cream boxes?
