neotoma: Neotoma albigula, the white-throated woodrat! [default icon] (Default)

I got home last night, and my computer was lying to me. It said my LAN was unconnected because a cable was unplugged. I hadn't done anything, except forget to shut down the computer before leaving for work -- all the cables were in place, and all the blinky lights were blinking appropriately.

However, the computer was not able to connect to my ISP -- I thought maybe the rainstorm had knocked them out, but when I called the service line, that wasn't the case.

What *was* the case is that although there is a good connection from my ISP to my modem, the connection to my computer is dead. Either the ethernet cable is fried, or the ethernet ports on the modem are.

Which means I'm going to try to fix things by getting a new ethernet cable today after work -- but in all luck the ethernet ports on my modem are fried. It will take a bit more time and money to get *that* replaced.

So I may be incommunicado for the rest of the evening, or for the rest of the week. What fun...
