My Mom has a vacation thing that means she and Dad might be spending a week in Canada at the end of May, probably in Ontario and Quebec. The important thing is that she doesn't want to rent a car. Any suggestions for a retired math teacher and a retired engineer to do for a week?

Toronto? I haven't been there since I was ten, but good size city, public transportation, good museum.

There is plenty to do in Toronto. If they're theater fans, there are terrific theaters in the city. They could also take the train out to Stratford and see a play or two. Stratford is a beautiful little town and worth seeing even if they don't stay for a play. I've never been to Quebec so I can't recommend anything there.

Ottawa...the nation's capital borders both Ontario and Quebec.

There's the canal, Byward Market, wonderful green spaces and fantastic restaurants, on both sides of the river. PLUS Gatineau Park just 15 minutes away from centre town. There are all sorts of tours for those who don't want to be bothered with a car. There's the Ghost Walk as well....

Check out the Outaouais Tourist Region sites.

I would suggest Toronto, Ottawa or Montreal. All of them have their things to offer, but, most importantly, once downtown everything is either in walking distance or there is public transportation to it

I can be bias and say Toronto, though, for the cool factor ;)

The trains between Toronto and Montreal (and Ottawa) are fantastic. And the subway in the cities are also fantastic. Toronto's PATH system is the largest underground walkway in the world, and I'm guessing Montreal's is a close second. Both very walkable cities, no matter the weather!

As for what to *do* in either city... me, I like wandering through the shops/cafes on Queen Street West (in T dot) or the ones on Sherbourne in Montreal. But there are plenty of touristy things to do, too :)
