Apparently, almost all of my county is under Mandatory Water Restrictions through Wednesday, due to burst water mains upcounty. I came home from work to find a message from the apartment management on the entrance door.

This means we are supposed to:

Not do laundry
Not run dishwashers
Boil all water
Limit toilet flushing

I'm a bit worried now about it all, because I certainly didn't hear anything about this in the morning -- did I expose myself to something nasty brushing my teeth before leaving for work?

Also, how am I going to manage without tap water for three days? It's just about all I drink, once run through a water filter. And I certainly need my kitchen sink to cook food...

Bleagh!

You did not expose yourself to anything, the boil water order is just a precaution, in case the lowered water pressure lets anything seep in over the next few days. Chances are good you could continue to drink straight water without anything bad, but as I said earlier, wouldn't you feel dumb if you got dystentery? ;)

You should have some water pressure (I hope), you just have to boil your water before you drink it. Maybe in a kettle or a big soup pot? I was getting ready to use our gigantic stock pot when I discovered that we're just south of the affected area.

I don't know how far away you are, but if you need to run a load of laundry or something, we're in the southern end of Rockville, just north of Bethesda.

Yeah, I heard at work today that the chances of you catching something if you drank this morning is rather low. Just if you do feel ill, go to the doctor, blah blah.

I'm trying to figure out if I'm affected, because I live in PG, not M county, but it's close-ish, and it's the same water supplier (as far as I can tell, based on the hydrants). I don't think I am, but they've been a bit vague...

I think you'll be okay from brushing your teeth in the morning right as this was starting. It's the next 3-4 days that I'm concerned about. The water pressure should be back to normal shortly, but we're still supposed to boil our drinking/cooking water for the next 3 days.

If you can't find bottled water to drink, I guess you're going to have to boil water and then store it in your fridge for drinking.

I figure that I'll just keep piling dirty dishes in my dishwasher until it's safe to wash them again. I don't fancy the idea of having to boil huge pots of water just to wash my dishes.

I've been brushing my teeth and drinking filtered tap water like normal, and it seems fine so far. I've been trying to limit my other water use, but I really need to do laundry!
