I finally went to see this with a friend yesterday.
It's an amazing movie, but why did no one warn me that Christopher Lee was in it?
I was startled when I saw his name in the credits -- I really do like his work, but I wasn't expecting him in it it all -- since everyone has been raving about Johnny Depp's performance.
Then when it turned out he was the narrator, I was grooving on it. He really does have a wonderful voice for narration roles.
So I had a moment of *complete* freak out when he turned out to the be the dentist father. I was totally not expecting it.
On the other hand, Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka was even better than I was expecting, and having seen what Depp can do when he really sinks his teeth into a part, I was expecting very good indeed. His Wonka is deeply creepy and not quite human -- he's completely willing to say whatever comes into his head no matter how badly it sounds to other people. It was hilarious and wonderful, and very very creepy, exactly as Roald Dahl wrote him.
Danny Elfman's version of the Oompa Loompa songs were hilarious and exactly what I expect from Oingo Boingo's songwriter. Very very catch and '80s.
In short, it was a wonderful, disturbing Tim Burton movie, and I am looking forward to Corpse Bride.

No, I was just thinking that the full length dentist's jacket was actually more disturbing than any costume I've ever seen Lee in before -- Dracula's cape, Saruman's robes, Dooku's Sith-wear, none of them made me freak out more than Dr. Wilbur Wonka's white jacket.
