Today was the great furniture hunt. On Wednesday, I looked at an Ikea loft bed, but decided it was too tall -- especially as I don't have the exact measurements of the apartment yet, and would rather not wind up bumping into the ceiling every time I turn over.
I also looked at the furniture at the Model Home Clearance store -- all the furniture used to dress up model homes is resold to the public here -- but as lovely as the pieces all were, they were also very EXPENSIVE. The only thing that I was really tempted by was a dresser carved on the front with vines, with leaves cleverly carved as the drawer handles. It was slightly over $800, so I had to walk away.
Today, I went to the mall, and was depressed. I saw two things I liked: a console table with fold-out leaves that was neat but at $500 not including chairs, too pricey, and a coffee table that looked like three giant books stacked on top of each other, but also much too price). There was also a chaise lounge, but as much as I like the shape, it was too big for the apartment.
After looking at three shops at the mall, I had a brain storm and remember the antique and used furniture shop that is close St. Martin parish, where we lived when my family first moved to Maryland. The shop is a really old, strange building that never looks open, but has a *ton* of nifty things inside.
Success! The shoplady didn't even bat an eye when I said I need things for an apartment, and took me right up to the attic, where all the *nifty* things live -- including an old weasel skeinwinder.
The table she showed me is a Stickley-style dining table, with an insertable leaf and *six* matching chairs. The armchairs that I saw two years ago and drooled over where still there -- right by the table -- and still comfy as anything. There was a little coffetable right across the aisle that caught my eye with the curve of its legs. I made out like a bandit -- the only thing I liked that I didn't buy was the rocking chair with the swan heads carved into the arms.
So, a completely successful day. Ten pieces of furniture for under $2000. I still need to buy a *bed*, and a computer desk, but I have enough stuff to have a dinner for eight, or a couple of friends over for movie night.
Wee!

All I got was a bed (and foundations for my mattress) and armoire. Still spent $1500 myself.
Table? What's that? I eat at my desks. Friends over? What are friends? :)
Congratulations, by the way. Successful furniture shopping is definitely something to celebrate.

It's also closed the entire months of July and August, so if you're looking, you've got to get there soon.
Just don't buy the swan head rocker, okay?
