I'm thinking of trying to organize a knitting group for the Harry Potter convention in October, The Witching Hour.

I'd like it to be fan orientated, obviously, and welcoming to inexperienced knitters. To my mind, the easiest thing to do would be to have copies of Hogwarts House Scarves pattern on hand, suggest people bring their own projects or the yarn and needles for the scarves, and get one of the Rooms of Requirement (prearranged meeting spaces) set up through the WH staff.

Does that sound like a workable plan? Would you come if you were at Witching Hour?

Damn it all! You're going to TWH too? I was supposed to go as well, but had to cancel due to school committments. Man, I knew I should have tried harder!

So, when are you going to take a weekend to visit me in DC then?

From: [identity profile] snowballjane.livejournal.com

That sounds like an excellent idea. Maybe if people want to make something they could finish on the day they could make house-elf sized scarves (to be worn as wristbands).

From: [identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com

That could certainly work -- knitting pulse warmers as beginners projects. They'd have to be ribbed or knit flat in garter stitch though -- otherwise the silly things wouldn't lie right.

HEE! I think I might be convinced! *g* I've been trying to get it together to make a Slyth scarf for ages, and I just haven't done it yet. *smacks self* This might be good incentive! :D

Thanks, Ang.

I take it you know how to knit already? Would you rather just bring the yarn and needles and start a Hogwarts Scarf there, or would you just bring whatever project you happen to be working on at the time?

I'm also thinking that maybe it should be open to people who want to learn to knit, as the Hogwarts Scarf pattern is stockinette in the round. All you'd have to teach people is how to cast on, cast-off and knit, so a limited number of never-knit-befores could make a go of it.

From: [identity profile] anjenue.livejournal.com

haha I can knit scarves. that is about the extent of my knitting proficiency. and I usually don't use patterns. but yes, I can knit, and will probably make myself start something beforehand so I have something useful to work on. :D

and yes, I think I could probably handle teaching people...though at the moment, I need a bit of a refresher myself. *eyes dusty needles*

I've been going back and forth about attending this. Anyone else going from DC?

From: [identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com

[livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedom said she wanted to, but I don't know if she's registered yet. I don't know about anyone else.

If you do come, you're welcome to share a room. I'm going to make hotel reservations soon, probably this week.

drop me an email offline so we can talk more about it: bratsey@yahoo.com

From: [identity profile] greenwitch.livejournal.com

I've been thinking about the same thing (I mod [livejournal.com profile] weasleysweaters and was thinking about some sort of meetup), granted, I don't know if I will be attending yet (yeah, still undecided about applying to grad school or getting a "real job" either of which time commitments I have no idea about...)

This sounds like great fun! I'm going to TWH, and would love to have a knitting group there. I know how to knit, have made a Slytherin house scarf, and would volunteer to help get people started on scarves.

From: [identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com

A co-conspirator! Thank goodness.

I was thinking that having the group be open to all, but with the caveat that never-knit-befores would get only as much attention as could be spared -- and would have to bring yarn and needles with them, since I am certainly not giving it out free. If there is a local yarn shop, I suppose we could direct the inexperienced there for supplies.

OMG! I so want to learn to knit, so if you all are open to non-knitters, I'll be there!

'm willing to teach a limited number of never-knit-befores, but I'd expect them to have the yarn and needles already. I'm not sure if there is a yarn shop in Salem, but you could certainly print out the Hogwarts Scarf pattern, take it to your local yarn shop and ask them to help you pick out yarns and needles before you leave for WH.

I'd recommend against acrylic yarns for a beginner, since they aren't as easy to work with as wools. If you need to have a machine-washable scarf, ask for machine-washable ('superwash') wool yarn.

WAIT! What about knitting needles on a plane? I can't imagine those are ok.

From: [identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com

It depends on the airline whether or not you can have them in your carry-on, but you can always but them in your checked luggage.

You'd be using circular needles, which aren't nearly as dangerous looking as straights.

I've been flying weekly a while now... and I *always* have knitting needles. I've had no problems with the TSA in: LA, KC, Boston, LaGuardia, Nashville, Milwaukee, Birmingham, Sacramento, Albuquerque, Denver, Phoenix, Las Vegas. Delta, United, Midwest, Frontier, American West, Southwest. None gave me any problems.

Just fyi.

Oh. Plastic needles, bamboo, *aluminum*. Straight. Double-pointed. Circular. Sometimes all at once. Never a problem.

It's on the FAA website.

:)

From: [identity profile] blaise-queen.livejournal.com

Great. Thanks everyone for the input. Now which kind to get I've never knitted in my life.

From: [identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com

Bamboo needles are good, as are nickle-plated metal ones. Inox is a good affordable brand.

From: [identity profile] abigail89.livejournal.com

Hey, great idea. I've made Gryffindor and Slytherin scarves, neither of which are in my possession. I used a simple pattern with a simple knit border in acrylic yarn (kids, bah!).

I'll be there!

From: [identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com

Well, I like the atypically.net pattern because it is knit in the round -- no purling -- and because it's a free pattern.

I could always try to make Snape's 2x2 rib scarf, but it's in black chenille. It'd be easier for me to weave that sucker than to knit it.

knitting only?

I was just wondering, if this would be open to crocheters too?

From: [identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com

Re: knitting only?

Of course crochet would be welcome. It's just that I'm much more qualified to help newbie knitters than newbie crocheters.

Would you be willing to do that, o belle inconnu?

From: [identity profile] chaosdancer.livejournal.com

Oh heck yeah, if I was able to go I'd love to have a knitting group! Cool idea!

From: [identity profile] phoenixw.livejournal.com

I am and I would and I will if there is such a thing as a knitting group at TWH. What a great idea! I suppose I'll have to pack the needles in the suitcase though.

From: [identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com

Depends on the airline (I assume you're flying). I always ask at check-in. I've had no problems with plastic crochet hooks ever, and been waved through with metal ones and even with circular needles.

But it they are your only needle or particularly good ones, into the checked luggage they go.

From: [identity profile] evil-knitter.livejournal.com

YES! I would definitely come! Both of my obsessions at ONCE!! Yay!

From: [identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com

Do you drag your knitting all over too? I wound up crocheting a baby blanket during Convention Alley and I'm sure that's how I'm remebered: "the woman who was crocheting that green and purple thing".

From: [identity profile] blaise-queen.livejournal.com

Hey Nich, if you are driving up, could you bring me some needles? I'll get my own yarn. I don't think they'll let me take the needles on the plane.
M

From: [identity profile] blaizezabini.livejournal.com

M- you can take needles on a plane. Just try to choose short bamboo ones. If you can deal with circular needles that works out even better. And, probably they'd get bitchy if you had huge thick ones, but I don't know. I took the tineist needles ever when I flew, but the lady next to me had normal ones.

From: [identity profile] hak42.livejournal.com

Sounds good. You are definately more on top of things than I am. I'm not a very experienced knitter, but I can help teach the basics. If you need any help, just let me know.

From: [identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com

First I need to contact The Witching Hour. I'll try to keep everyone abreat of things.

knitting shop in Salem

I checked the phone directory, and there is a yarn shop listed located at Pickering Wharf: Arbella Yarns. Perhaps they would be willing to stock some supplies for us?
