This one wasn't that easy to write. There are definite consent issues, since Iros is basically extorting sex for protection. However, neither of them are from modern cultures; the main difference between the cultures how the rank to shameless advantage is obtained.

Turnspit woke someplace strange, on a too soft surface with too few bodies around him. There was only one other beside him and no low snores from the rest of his mining workgang.

He began to tremble when his bedmate turned over and snuffled against his neck. A hard arm flopped over his side, pulling him back against the long body. Nausea crept up his throat. He wondered if he could get away before his clockwork was tripped and dropped him to the floor.

"Turnspit?" mumbled a sleepy voice as his bedmate squirmed closer.

"Iros," he identified. "Oh…" His clockwork ratcheted down enough that that he could breath with less care.

Iros' voice was warm and made Turnspit's skin tightened, like a memory of sunlight. "Hmmm. Good morning, my Dog."

Turnspit yelped, suddenly. Iros had licked him, one solid swipe over his shoulder-blade. He jerked and fell off the bed.

"Turnspit?" the aughisky threw off their coverlet and tried to pull Turnspit back into the narrow bed.

He batted at Iros' hands, and snapped out, "I'm alright! I'm alright!"

"You don't look alright." Iros frowed, "Your eyes are all glowy. That's not normal. Humans don't have eye-shine, I know that."

Turnspit froze, then touched his cheeks. He could see the faint glow reflected off his fingernails. "It's just the clockwork, so that I can see in the dark. All the miners have it."

"Oh." Iros grinned, "that's useful, then." He stretched contently, and shook out his braids. He turned to look in bafflement at Turnspit, who was crouched beside the narrow bed. "What are you doing on the floor?"

"I didn't remember where I was when I awoke. You startled me. And then you licked me!"

Iros laughed at that, and stuck out his tongue long enough to lick his lips. "I was just getting started. Do you always wake up so nervous? I'll have to train that out of you. Could be fun, if you need a lot of work…" Iros' grin went amused to lascivious, in a way that made Turnspit's heart grow cold.

"Iros..."

"You're my Dog. Why are you so nervous?" Iros frowned, then said earnestly, "I won't hurt you, you know that?"

"I don't think I can..." Turnspit choked, trying not to sob, though he trembled again.

Iros tilted his head, his voice going quiet and sad, "Do you not want to be my Dog? I can leave you here, if you'd rather-"

"NO!"

"Then come back up here." Iros patted the bed.

"I..." Turnspit shivered. "Is it... Must I... You will not take me with you if I refuse to..?" he halted. He didn't know any words for it that weren't foul, and very few that could be spoken in Iros' language. Also, his voice was shaky, and he worried about his clockwork making him fall over if he did not control himself better.

"I want you to be my Dog, not just my protectorate." Iros reached out, and lay his long fingers on Turnspit's cheek. He smiled when Turnspit leaned into the touch. "A companion on the Long Road, who chases my prey, bites my enemies, and curls up with me in the night."

Iros cocked his head, and added, "And you did lick my hand, Turnspit."

Turnspit gulped down his nerves, and nodded, "I did. You'll take me away from here?"

"I am not a Brock, to love confinement. I will go soon. If you pledge to be my Dog, I will take you with me, and care for you the rest of your days."

Turnspit breathed deep. He would find no better offer, indeed no other offer at all. It was sheerest luck that an aughisky who remembered him had been in the sun gallery that shift. That would not happen again, and he could not face going back to the deeps when there was a chance not to live condemned in the dark laying before him.

He dropped his head to Iros' knees in surrender. When the aughisky started petting his head again, he licked the other's hands tentatively.

Iros stilled his petting, and spread his fingers, and Turnspit took that as a signal. Carefully, he raised his hands, and wrapped them around Iros'. He looked up into other's eyes, and deliberately set his mouth down on the heavy knuckles.

Iros laughed at that, and grasped him about the arms, pulling off the shirt Turnspit had slept in. His frank, appraising stare was appalling, as was his contented hum after a moment. He snickered, apparently at Turnspit's blushes, and drew Turnspit up into the bed beside him.

Turnspit stiffened for a moment, thinking that he was going to be tossed face down, but instead Iros rolled him onto his back. The aughisky laughed as he draped himself over Turnspit, and grinned wickedly before licking a swathe over Turnspit's eyes.

Turnspit could not help but give a tremulous smile at Iros' blatant joy. The other's happiness implied that he might be treated very well if he could just get through the encounter Iros expected of him. At the very worst, his clockwork might engage and he would become limp and compliant; he did not think the aughisky would prefer that, but it would probably be acceptable, if only for the fact that he would neither cry nor fight with the clockwork engaged.

He shivered when Iros breathed deliberately against his face. Turnspit blew a puff of air back at him; that was familiar, an aughisky trick to calm horses, apparently nervous Dogs too. The aughisky's black eyes were soft, and his hands gentle as he leaned down to lick at Turnspit's temple, over his eyes and cheek, and then down to his neck. Aughisky did not kiss, he knew that, but the scratchy tongue going up to his ear and down to his collarbone made him squirm.

He could feel the warmth and excitement Iros threw off, and over that roiled the musky sensation of influence. It was heady, like being wrapped in incense and warm blankets and for once attractive instead of insidious. He tried to grab it, pull it close and let it infect him.
