I went to see 28 Weeks Later with [livejournal.com profile] molly_o, her husband, and [livejournal.com profile] natlyn this afternoon. For a zombie movie, it was pretty nifty -- I especially liked how the female officer was cool and collected most of the time, even when running from deranged killer zombies.

However, there was a problem with the idiot ball. Admittedly, people are going to react badly to stress and do stupid things. But the idea that a military force wouldn't take the necessary precautions to quash people from getting far in their stupid plans made me roll my eyes.

1) The lack of bunny suits after they realize Alice is a carrier just makes me lose all belief in the screenplay. They had her washed in a decontamination shower by someone in an NBC suit -- she should have been in an airlocked Biohazard Level Four suite with everyone wearing a positive-pressure biohazard suit with a battery-powered air supply, given the nature of the 'rage virus', the moment the Major figured out that she was a carrier.

2) The lack of guards to the suite that she was kept in, and the way Don apparently wasn't *told* anything. Guards would have kept him away from Alice, and being told would have kept him from going *inside* and touching her. Of course, not being stupid with guilt would have helped too...

3) The Major not explaining to the *kids* why she wanted to protect them, or to her superior. Natural immunity would have gotten those kids airlifted out and to the Pasteur Institute if she'd just spoken up at the right time.

4) Shutting down the lights. Don't lock all your civilians in a hot zone in one big room, lock them in, and then shut off the *lights*. It's a wonderful way to incite panic, and if there *is* an infected person wandering around, you've just put all your vulnerable people in one spot for a chain reaction.

5) The lack of light in the sniper's alley. Uhm, if you're going to shoot zombies as they come boiling out of the night, wouldn't it be nice to have the area you plan to shoot them in brightly lit? Especially since the zombies don't seem to be smart enough to use guns themselves?

6) The ending made me unhappy. I suppose Australia and the two Americas would just have to abandon the megacontinent. Sub-saharan Africa might also survive, as well as Madgascar, Iceland, and Japan, because I doubt the zombies are clever enough to survive a desert trek or to steer boats.
