So what actually is the status of the Lucian Alliance in the Stargate ‘verse? Are they considered a legal government by the Tau’ri or are they considered a criminal syndicate?

Because the attempted Lucian invasion of Destiny on Stargate Universe makes me wonder – when they failed, are they soldiers captured and now prisoners of war, or are they captured pirates, legally? Marooning the majority of them makes a lot of sense if they are legally pirates, who don’t have the same protections of as prisoners of war.

I think they are just treated like the Space Mafia. I only remember a handful of eps where they're even mentioned, tho.

I would think so. I'm still really early in my rewatch, and tbh I'm not even sure I have those seasons. But I remember them as drug dealers and sending 'bounty hunter/assassins' before they were dropped for the Ori plot.

We first meet the Lucian Alliance as a kind of resistance movement back in the Goa'uld days. One of Lord Yu's senior people (not a Jaffa?) was a member. They cooperated with the Tau'ri off and on including in the final battle to bring down the replicators which also marked the end of most of the system lords. At that point, they became de facto if not de jure governments for some planets, conquerors of others, and occasional allies against the Ori.

They have a point. The Tau'ri may be the original humans with the newest tech and the largest planetary population, but we aren't the only humans and we kind of sick at protecting other planets with which we've allied.

On the otherhand, they have aspects of the Mafia, pirate ships, and terrorists all rolled into one touchy package.
