He would've been raised mostly by the community's males until he's old and strong enough to join the other females in their own set of activities. One of the females laid the egg he hatched out of, and one of the males helped make that laying happen, but he doesn't know which one, and whenever he asked he never got an answer and was actively discouraged from asking again. So by the time he finds Dean and Sam, who were raised by their parents, he immediately thinks John and Mary were incredibly selfish people, to keep their children all to themselves.
Also, when he needs to get clean and wash out his hair, Cas takes a dust bath. It's Sam who figures out what he's doing first.
