Actually, I kind of liked that retcon, if only for the way it felt like a punch in the gut to learn that the Angel of the Annunciation was so bereft by the disappearance of God that he ran off to be irresponsible.
As for white male Tricksters, I can think of Reynard the Fox, Jack of the Jack Tales (which would have been my choice, because a lot of those stories are strongly American), and the Ash Lad.
