neotoma: "Squee!" goes the bunny (SqueeBunny)

Last night, [personal profile] ellen_fremedon, the Vegan Knitter, and I went to see In A World... which turned out to be a wonderfully done screwball comedy focusing on trailer voice-over artists and the jockeying to succeed the great late Don LaFontaine.

One of the best things about this movie is that everyone in it acted like an adult -- sometimes selfish, immature adults -- who were making terrible choices because sometimes adults do make terrible choices, instead of the characters making stupid choices because the plot demanded they do. Another thing that I liked is that people actually had to work at their relationships and prioritize between their jobs, their desires, and their loved ones -- in other words, act like adults. It's a serious rare thing in comedies, and it was so refreshing to see.

Another thing I liked is that the cast was mostly in the ordinary/average part of the looks spectrum, which makes total sense for a movie setting in an industry where people 'have a face made for radio'. I still was able to pick out the professional voice actors doing cameos though -- partly because they did have extraordinary voices and partly because they just weren't as polished as the people who are professional screen actors.

I heartily recommend going to see this. It was wonderfully original, never insulted the viewer's intelligence, and only had a few moments that were truly wince-worthy painful, but which totally worked because part of the story is about the main character's relationship with her father, a well-regarded voice artist who undercuts her. I'm going to keep my eyes open for the next thing Lake Bell does, especially the next she writes and/or directs.

Also I kind of wish I could see the Amazon Games movies (which is what everyone is trying to get hired to do the trailers for) now -- the trailer is that good!
