I've been thinking about getting the movie via Netflix, if only to see the director's cut. I saw the movie in the theater with [personal profile] greenygal, and had very mixed feelings about it. It *was* quite beautifully shot, Jackie Earle Haley knocked it out of the park playing Rorschach, Billy Crudup as Dr. Manhattan was spooky and detached and yet very interesting, in a role that really doesn't have easy hooks, and the change of the catastrophe worked within the bounds of the film.

But I didn't like the added gore -- the graphic novel is bloody and violent, but also manages to *imply* so much of the violence that the movie decided to *show* -- the stylized slow-motion, or certain tweaks that I felt undermined necessarily ambiguous characterization. It makes me think that the director missed the entire point of the story.

I've also been reading a good bit of Watchmen fic -- sequential crack has started recommending stories -- and I keep being surprised at the inventiveness of the fans, especially when they get into AU (cowboys, wingifc, dystopia, zombie apocalypse, genderflipping, etc. etc...). You can find something that suits your cravings at the Watchmen Fanfic Directory, which is comprehensively tagged and organized and frequently updated.

For myself, I'm reading a lot of AUs (cause really, who can resist a story with Rorschach and Nite Owl and the zombie apocalypse?!) and am finding that I really like finding writers who write Laurie well, since she's a difficult character.
