Last night,
gblvr and I went to see The Golden Compass.
It was gorgeous!
It's like Lord of the Rings in how completely realized the world is, and there are wonderful touches all over the place. Starting with Derek Jacobi and ( spoiler )in cameo roles as Magisterum (read Church) officials. Sam Elliot as Lee Scoresby, Texican balloonist, is a treat, especially with Kathy Bates doing the voice of his daemon, Hester.
Dakota Blue Richards is an amazing actress in a role that is quite challenging; Lyra is something of a brat child, being as she's been raised by the Scholars of Jordan College and generally allowed to run wild with the servant and Gyptian children.
The book is fairly dense -- it is Young Adult, so not really aimed at elementary school kids -- so there is some compression of the action, and some of the exposition is wedged into the movie with a shovel. But I will be seeing it again, in IMAX if I can find it.
