Last night,
sanj,
gblvr and I went to the Mediaeval Baebes concert at the Institute of Musical Traditions. This was a sold-out show, and well worth the money.
The Baebes came out in red dresses, and changed twice during the show, once into white dresses (which
gblvr thought were rather Art Noveau), and later into goth-ish black ones.
The energy of the show was incredible. As good at they are on CD, if you get a chance, you should see them live. They really do bring the divine feminine into their work, in a way that I don't think I've ever seen before; the frame for the show should be silly, but wasn't, even though they had to break roles a few times for technical problems with the microphones.
The last time I attended anything that approached the numinous that way, it was a mass at the National Cathedral.
( A partial playlist for the show… )
Admittedly, these are only the ones I could identify and remember after I got home last night, and I completely missed the title of the new piece they performed.
The only real noticeable problem with the show was that the drums were a bit louder than they should have been, and the microphones failed twice (though it was quickly corrected and the songs went fine).
I'm going to keep an eye on the Institute of Musical Traditions, and try to go to more of their shows -- the prices are affordable, and the performers are pretty darned good. It's just that a lot of the concerts are on Monday evenings, which isn't exactly convienent. But I'm definitely going to Tanglefoot the next time they're in town...
