The guild meeting today was a talk by Nancy Shriber of Contemporary Sashiko. The level of detail she puts into her garments, and the way she uses various quilting techniques was just amazing. The gallery at her website doesn't even approach all the details you can see when you're actually looking at her garments.
I bought her book "Sashiko Handbags 14 on 14" -- 14 handbags made out of 14 inch by 14 inch squares of fabric. After quilting the fabric, you use origami folds to tranform them into a handbag. Using paper to make mockups, I did 6 of them easily, so I think I shall be making handbags this year for gifts and charity bazaar donations. It looks like a good way to practice sewing without getting in over my head.
ETA: Anyone local want to come with me to G-Street during the sale next week to paw through the remnants table for material to practice on? I think I shall be a bit extragant with my attempts.
