Enough Xmen fic recs to choke a hog ... Part 1

Xmen movie overview -- the movies [XMM] are popular, but people jump their fics off in different places, hence different ages for characters from the second and third movies.
Xmen comics overview -- the comics come in two flavors [comics] and [Ult-X]; that's the mainstream comics, with over 40 years of canon, and the Ultimate line, which has under 10 years. I couldn't find any good Mutant-X fics, which was a short-lived series in which Alex/Havoc found himself in a freaky universe where he'd basically lived Scott's life, being on the original team, marrying the hot redhead, and all; Scott got to live Corsair's life as a space pirate, and was one of the few times where he's wild and implusive -- good crack, in other words.

TEAM (some gen, some adult)

Aviation by [livejournal.com profile] penknife -- [XMM] Scott tries not to say things like you don't know how to build an airplane and you don't know how to fly an airplane and what in the hell, Hank, because he is aware that saying things like that does not make him popular.

Coalescence -- [livejournal.com profile] andrastewhite -- [XMM] In the beginning there are no words. Xavier, back and forth

All He is by Te -- [XMM] Five things that probably won't happen to Kurt.

Eros on Trial by [livejournal.com profile] minisinoo -- [Ult-X] Cyclops is showing an interest in a new woman, and she's not a mutant. But she might hold the keys to his family, and his past. What will his classmates -- and the professor -- make of Lee Forrester? Lee was always a great character, and her as an Ultimate character is fun

Hanging Lights by [livejournal.com profile] minisinoo -- [Ult-X] Snapshots of the decorating process . . . and purple lights. The Ultimate X-men being silly during the holidays; so freaking adorable.

Grail by [livejournal.com profile] minisinoo -- [XMM] At Alkali Lake, Jean Grey gave her life to save her fellows. But if so, what's risen from the water? A little bit ghost story, a little bit mystery, a little bit suspense. Really amazing storytelling, and a delightful difference from the third movie.

The Stuff of Nightmares by [livejournal.com profile] ridesandruns-- [comics] Hilarious send up of X3 from the comics characters viewpoint.

Zero Plus One by [livejournal.com profile] azurine -- [Ult-X] A friendship forms in the wake of Weapon X.

Lesson Plans by [livejournal.com profile] sionnain -- [comics] It’s hard to enforce simple academic procedures when you have Scott’s staff of instructors, especially when one of them is Logan.

The Second Angel by [livejournal.com profile] vagabond_sal --[XMM/The Day After Tomorrow] 'And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea. And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus'...

A Certain Kind of Light by [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce -- [comics] Emma said, "We all deserve a break," and Kitty said "Karaoke!" and the heartache that followed was pretty much inevitable. This is an absolutely serious story, that happens to contain a lot of jokes about the Bee Gees. The Astonishing team has a night out.

Some Rain Must Fall -- by [livejournal.com profile] vagabond_sal [XMM] Jean and Storm meeting for the first time. Lovely prequel to the movie, dealing with the earliest class at Xavier's

The More Things Change, the More they Stay the Same by [livejournal.com profile] wizefics -- [XMM] Magneto, after the Cure. with a not-jerk Pietro!

Cooking and Other Experiments by [livejournal.com profile] penknife -- [XMM] The first students cook Thanksgiving dinner at Jean's instigation; Scott has doubts.

The Last of the Jedi by [livejournal.com profile] artaxastra -- [XMM] What would you do if someone told you that you were special, that you needed to come learn how to use your unique talents? If you were Jean Grey, 11 years old in the summer of 1977, Star Wars would give you something to think about when the Jedi come to you. Tiny!Jean is so wonderful in this story; Xavier and Magneto are pretty nifty too...

Something Biblical, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5 by [livejournal.com profile] trollprincess -- [XMM] The end of the world doesn't come with a bang or a whimper -- just an eerie quiet followed by the slow rumble of something terrifying on the horizon. If Magneto had succeed at Alkali Lake...

1602

A while back, Neil Gaiman (yes, him, the guy who did SANDMAN) wrote a miniseries for Marvel set in 1602, with the X-Men, Avengers, and Fantastic Four and associated villians translated into an Elizabethean setting -- well, with dinosaurs -- and it was AMAZING. The resulting fic was pretty darned good, too.

The Waterfall by [livejournal.com profile] revelininsanity -- Irene waits for her husband to come home, and sees all the paths that they might walk. Irene, Raven, and the original backstory for Kurt! Squeee!

Beginnings by [livejournal.com profile] baffledking -- The founding of Carlos Javier's School for Young Gentlemen, or how he formed the J-Men.

Leap of Faith by [livejournal.com profile] st_aurafina -- what happened to everyone on the second Xmen team when Carlos and his original students fled to the New World? Kurt! Sean! Sinister! eeee!

Succubus by [livejournal.com profile] artaxastra Maria D'Acanto is a Succubus, and St. Augustine is no place for Witchbreed.

Rest on next post...

Oh, yay, this is a great list of recs!

I think there's a problem with the code (which you've probably realized by now!)

[identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, I think I went over the limit for the post. I'm moving the Hank Specific ones to a new post.

[identity profile] likeadeuce.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's actually not the length but a problem with the code?

If you have just one mistake in your coding, it can mess up the rest of the post.

[identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
No, but the length was making it impossible to *find* the error.

[identity profile] likeadeuce.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ahh, got it!

And yay, works now :)

I couldn't find any good Mutant-X fics,

This is a CHALLENGE, isn't it?

(Scott Porter from Friday Night Lights gets to be my Alex icon, because he would want it that way).

Oh yeah.

But it has so much potential, you know. Corsair!Scott, Fallen!Warren, Brute!Hank, Ice-man!Bob, and Ariel!Jean, not to mention Scotty, Magneto and the X-men, and happily-married-good-dad!Logan.

Re: also --

[identity profile] likeadeuce.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I've really only read a few issues, so the main thing I know is that Reed Richards has an extra pair of arms, Scott is a pirate, and some people are vampires.

Who is Logan married to?

Re: also --

[identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure it was Mariko. I know they had two kids, fairly young ones, and were living in Canada when Logan was kidnapped and mind-wiped by Weapon X; he winds up running around the north woods with Sabretooth and Wild Child, naked and out of his mind... but gets better and reunites with his family.

Sadly, it had better alternate takes on the characters than Ult-X in some ways. Possibly because the writers realized that no one was buying it so they could slip their leashes, rather like happened with Alpha Flight...

Though looking at all the alt versions of Hank that Marvel has done, I wonder if he has an unrecognized power of being able to regenerate his CNS, considering how often the various versions of him have had brain damage and recovered from it.

I might be able to bundle some scans to you. It was only thirty-odd issues...

Be warned, Bob (not Bobby, *Bob) looks like the love child of Jack Frost and the Snow Miser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_Miser), and Brute/Hank is green, scaly, finned, and walks on goat feet (frankly, if *that* possibility is lurking in his genome, 616!Hank is lucky that he only turned into a blue lion)

Received and, um. . .in the hypothetical Mutant X fic that I would hypothetically be writing --

Do you have feelings about Scott/Alex? (Or Scott/Alex/Maddy?)

Re: also --

[identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
Beyond the fact that they're *brothers*? I can't promise to finish it if it's got incest, but if writing it makes you happy, knock yourself out.

Have you gotten to issue 14 already? Cyclops is totally Corsair, isn't he?

Re: also --

[identity profile] likeadeuce.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, yeah, I -- have a little bit of a Summerscest thing. It's not a generalized kink, just THIS fictional family. But if you're not on board with that, forget I mentioned it and I'll find another angle for the fic :).

I have the files, haven't had time to start reading them yet -- but I'm looking forward to it and I'll certainly let you know what I think.

Have you read the Scott-Alex-Corsair issue of "Age of Apocalypse"?

Re: also --

[identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I read it, a long while back.

Corsair is dropped off on Earth by the Shi'ar because he's incubating a Brood (was that a deliberate attempt to wipe out Earth?) and he spends most of the issue trying to convince Alex and Scott that he is Chris Summers, and things are not supposed to be this way...?

Incest if it's wrong-messed up-not supposed to be sexy. Happy fluffy bunnies incest is what makes me go 'ick'.

Re: also --

[identity profile] likeadeuce.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes, and sorry if I've been offensive; I sort of assume that happy fluffy bunnies doesn't go with the Summers family, anyway.

Re: also --

[identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't have thought happy fluffy bunny incest would be popular in SUPERNATURAL either, but it is.

Heck, knock yourself out and have fun with the Mutant-X. It's got a lot of nifty ideas (and *someone* on the book had a major pirate-movie fixation, given the way Nightcrawler *and* Cyclops dress) and a sometimes atrocious execution thereof -- perfect for fanfic.
