Advice on Burning DVDs?

Advice please, on burning DVDs for the clueless, please?

Right now, I just want to burn a disc of fanvids for a friend (as I have broadband and freetime to download vids, and she doesn't), but eventually I'd like to make vids myself.

What do I need re: programs, format of blanks, etc?
