neotoma: Roadrunner fetish goes "beep beep!' (roadrunner)
( Dec. 31st, 2015 09:41 am)
Not a complete list by any means, but some delightful stories to read that you might not have seen anyway.

Goblin Emperor

Peace & Purring -- Csethiro and Maia escape the tenth iteration of their wedding rehearsal, and relax a little.

Imperial Radch

Daughter of Fishes -- Translator Zeiat has an ingenious idea that she thinks will make tea even better.

Ray Bradbury

When She Woke at Dawn -- The Martians are returning to Earth. (The Martian Chronicles & There Will Come Soft Rains)

Seseme Street

Felt Lines -- Sesame Street muppets talk about their personal experiences on StoryCorps.

Exclusive Content -- In old days, Cookie think, just having monsters on television was spooky. Monsters doing classy drama was transgressive. Transgressive mean it a thing that people not expect you to do, and they think you strange when you do it. It special kind of surprise.

Location is Everything -- Mr. Hooper has always wanted his own store.

Stargate Universe

Manifest Destiny -- "I think I've worked out the bad news on my own,” Rush says as crisply as he can, like that will keep the tremble out of his voice, and now he's the one who can't quite look at Eli. “What's the good news?”

Australia Is No Better Than Here -- Young and Rush, in the three year stasis. Or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, possibly.

Tomorrowland

Gift Guides for Grumpy Bastards -- When Casey tries to figure out a present for the birthday Frank doesn't want to celebrate, she finds the one person who knows everything there is to know on Frank Walker.

Vorkosigan Saga

Not Quite Vor -- Deportment isn't the sum of a girl's education when she grows up Koudelka. Few people stop to remember that quieter than Martya or gentler than Delia doesn’t mean particularly gentle or quiet.
Pan-Pacific Voices: 10 years, 5 interviews

Summary: 10 years, 5 interviews -- A selection from the Pan Pacific Voices Intiative of Storycorps, archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. aka Neotoma writes the surviving characters interviewing each other a la StoryCorps.

Written for the 2014 Pacific Rim Mini-Bang on Tumlbr. Art by Karmabees - so pretty! so cute!
I've been hit by a DC Comics plotbunny, since I was foolish enough to look on Tumblr and see how pretty the art is for the new 52 Flash (really pretty guys).. so I've been searching through my music library for songs to weaponize, because if I'm writing a Flash story, I'm writing Pied Piper, and if I'm writing Pied Piper I really should know what music he's using.

It's pretty sad that I looked through my 'fierce' playlist and rejected Black Sabbath songs as 'not aggressive enough'. Also, apparently I don't have enough Queen or Jethro Tull songs -- Queen because Piper canonically did blow up a planet using The Show Must Go On and Jethro Tull because that's the only rock band that I can that used a flute regularly.

Currently, I've got a few contenders for the ominous, 'you've fucked with the wrong guy, assholes' scene. In the Land of the Pigs (The Butcher is King) by Meatloaf, Exterminating Angel by The Creatures, or Godzilla by Blue Oyster Cult, which might just be a little on the nose. Of course, I could go with something completely instrumental like Avanti by Corvus Corax (which is an excuse to use the quakepipes!) or just Verdi's Dies Irae.

I'm also trying to figure out some alternative names super-hero/villain for some of the legacy characters I'm going to have in this story, since they don't want to disrupt their predecessors' lives by running around using a name they inherited from someone who doesn't know them from Adam. Currently, I'm trying to figure out what might work for Captain Boomerang II, Stargirl, Atom Smasher, and maybe Obsidian. Manhunter wouldn't feel the need to change hers, because it's quite generic, Spoiler gets to remain herself if she goes back to her original handle, and Impulse would be the first one of that name since the DCnU has Bart as Kid Flash but never Impulse, and I've already figured out what Piper gets stuck with, due to an ill-timed snarky remark from Boomerang.

Artist:[livejournal.com profile] viviantanner
Genre: bob-fic AKA there's some romance, but it's more gen than anything
Pairing (if applicable): Castiel/Dean, Sam/Gabriel
b>Word Count: 23710
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: some cursing and dirty jokes.
Author's Notes: This story came out of the season 5 mid-season hiatus, so it breaks off after episode 5.10. Therefore, no Kali, no Chuck=God, and very different characteristics for the Horsemen.
Written for the 2012 Sam/Gabriel Mini-Bang [livejournal.com profile] sabriel_mini.

Summary: Castiel finds God. This doesn't solve the Apocalypse, but does bring Dean and Sam new tools to fight with -- to wit, an entire
garrison and their soon-to-hatch eggs and a Word of God, which not even archangels can resist for long. Figuring out how to use these new tools and in what ways is Sam's new problem, and Gabriel isn't exactly helpful.

I only wrote three stories this year, all in Supernatural:

I've decided that I like challenges and exchanges, because they give me a deadline to shoot for, and that kind of structure helps me actually finish things. I've also figured that I really can't write short or fast, so I avoid participating in drabble, comment-fic, kink-memes, bingos, reverse big bangs, and other things that have short time windows and small word-count expectations. For me, a short story is 6000 words, and anything under that is really hard to get out -- in fact, I only have one story on AO3 under 1000 words, and that is a one-scene wonder.

In the new year, I'm working on another [livejournal.com profile] gabriel_bigbang story -- which is delving deep into my ID Vortex, so who knows if anyone else will want to read it -- and one for [livejournal.com profile] 1upona_sabriel based on The Swan Maiden.

So, apparently this guy named Keith Mander bought LOTRFanfiction.com and a Twilight fanfic archive -- [personal profile] esteliel has wonderful coverage here -- and is going to monetize them ... somehow.

This is not good.

OTW has already posted their reaction to this -- they're offering Archive of Our Own accounts to any writer from those sites who don't already have an AO3 account and the OTW coders already working on custom importers for anyone who wants to transfer their stories.

My own take on it is that this guy is going to be no more successful at monetizing fanfic than the guys behind FanLib, mostly because the core fanficcers will flee from this kind of horsecrap. Fanfic exists in gray areas to start with and has a gift culture that is fairly shy of attracting attention from the rights' holders, and blundering in trying to make money off of other people's fanfic is considered beyond the pale. In part, because it violates the gift culture, but also because it just emphasizes just how much of a clueless outsider you are and that you might just bring down the attention of rights' holders (like the Tolkien estate, which is pretty fierce about their ownership of the the rights) on people who have been trying to fly under their radar.

So, I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] sabriel_mini, because apparently I *like* stress and weirdness.

Who is willing to be my alpha reader/hand-holder/cheerleader this time round? it looks like it might be a gen or m/m/f threesome story (depending on how it kinks) that is an AU -- I'll need to rewatch the first season, because I'm putting Jess in -- I'm tired of all the female characters I liked being dead, so I'm un-deading them.

I'm going to make a special filter for the writing process this time round. But I also like to get on GoogleChat and other IM system to hash out the plot/character/insanity, and I'm on East Coast USA time, so if you think you're up for cheerleading a Sam & Gabriel SPN story, drop me a note.

Birds of Passage -- cover image by cashay

Summary: Lucifer is back in his Cage, but one averted Apocalypse doesn't mean much in the face of another, more human one. Sam Winchester, the Archangel Gabriel, and a man millennia out of his own time have wandered into a small Kansas town, where they get to deal with tree thieves, suspicious sheriffs, shady characters, political in-fighting, looming starvation, and the occasional pagan deity passing through. It's just one damn thing on top of another after The End of the World. [Crossover with JERICHO (tv series)]

Prologue: I will lay my burden in the cradle of your grace
Part One: Every highway leads you prodigal
Part Two: Strange dances long undone
Part Three: The twigs and briars
Part four: Blood in the service of the lord of hosts
Part Five: Only the rain knows
Part Six: A voice on the wind, and the wages of sin
Part Seven: every backroad in that broken promise land
Epilogue: A dime and a dollar and a one-way ticket home
