Farmer's Market -- 24 June 2017 (Rosemary Day, 6th of Harvest, Year 225)

Spanakopita, roasted olive bun, mixed herb bread, beet confit, pita, fresh fettuccine, spinach & cheese ravioli, eggplant ragu, quart of Mocha Moo, pint of cheese curds, spinach empanada, bluefish empanada, 2 bottles of hickory vinegar (made from shagbark hickory, the same source for hickory syrup).

I'm going to make Sweet Cherry ketchup this afternoon; I've got a six-at-a-time cherry pitter to help with that. Hopefully, the hickory vinegar will give is a nice finish that will make it into an interesting barbecue sauce.

Jamming! -- Rye Day, 1st of Harvest, Year 225

I made Strawberry Vanilla Jam tonight, with limes instead of lemons... because the store didn't have organic lemons. If I'm going to put zest into a food, I prefer that there's no chance of pesticides going into the food.

Anyway, the yield was 2 pint jars, 2 half-pint jars, and 2 quarter-pint jars of strawberry vanilla jam... one of those pint jars will go to the Ag Fair, but the rest..? Will get distributed at whim, probably. I have promised [personal profile] texasgrandma that I will label anything else I send her, instead of sending mystery ketchup, but that's all.

BeauSoleil at Millenium Stage on 27 June

BeauSoleil will be performing at the Millennium Stage on Tuesday, June 27. I'd love to meet up with other fans for the show and have dinner afterward, probably at BeefSteak (vegetarian friendly). They are performing at Millenium Stage as a collaboration between the Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.

Speaking of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival -- June 29-July4 and July 6-9 -- this year is the 50th anniversary and they're focusing on Circus Arts! Also 'On the Move' and '50 Years, 50 objects'. But I'm definitely going for the circus!

Let me know if you're interested in either event (or both!) and we can arrange to meet up.

Farmer's Market -- 18 June 2017 (Hand Cart Day, 30th of Meadow, Year 225)

Batard of sourdough, chicken empanada, tamale del elote, 2 quarts sour cherries, 1 quart yellow sweet cherries, 1 quart strawberries, 1 pint apricots, 1 pint blueberries, 1 pint snap peas, and a pork tenderloin (aka pork fish).

Yesterday, there were peaches (!!!) at the market, and today there were apricots. I think everything is going to be weeks early this summer.

Currently, I'm macerating strawberries to make jam tomorrow -- I'll need to go shopping for organic lemons as I'm going to zest them, and pick up ginger for the cherry ketchup. I'll marinate and cook the pork later; I might make a sweet potato to go with it, especially if I'm going to eat if for lunch at work tomorrow.

Farmer's Market -- 17 June 2017 (Peony day, 29th of Meadow, Year 225)

Quart of mocha moo, pint of cheese curds, 3 dry quarts of red sweet cherries. They had some of the yellow sweet cherries, but no pie cherries -- either they're not in yet or they sold out before I got in.

I'm planning on making sweet cherry ketchup and some other sauces and entering them in the county fair this year -- I've already got jam that I could enter, so it'll be fun. I could do a 'selection of five pickles, relishes, or sauces' or 'selection of five jams/jellies' for the Home Arts -- Department 41, Food Preservation division.

I also might enter the Kraken Knuckles I am making for [personal profile] fabrisse in the Adult Gloves, Colorwork division, and either the orange gloves I made for myself, or the purple gloves I made for [personal profile] greenygal for Adult Gloves, One Color or Yarn, if I can find the buttons that were supposed to go with them and actually sew them on...

And in the very unlikely event I get my Fox Paws done, I am damn well entering it into competition because that pattern is ridiculous... gorgeous, but ridiculous.

Job, eyeglasses, and bean dishes -- Tench Day. 25th of Meadow, Year 225

I tried making enfrijoladas last night -- pretty good, but I did skimp on the amount of bean broth to add, so next time I'll have to trust the recipe more. On the other hand, it cooks up very quick if you have fresh beans to work with and is very tasty even if you don't have avocado leaves or Mexican tarragon; a half-cup of Midnight Black Beans cooks up to a full cup easily. I will make it again.

I've been looking at Zenni Optical as a possible solution to me getting new eyeglasses -- I can get a pair of progressives and and a pair of distance glasses with detachable sunlens for about $200 total. I'll just have to wait until I actually have a few weeks pay to order.

And speaking of pay, I'm set to start work Thursday, which should be somewhat cooler than today, which was just under 100F. This is going to be a miserable summer, if we're already getting this kind of heat. I'll be sure to bring a water bottle with me to work so I don't dehydrate in transit.

The wheels are off -- Bedstraw Day, 24th of Meadow, Year 225

The wheel came off [personal profile] ellen_fremedon's grocery cart again today. I think it's not repairable -- or not permenantly repairable, as the wheel keeps coming off when I'm using it. I going to look at replacement option on Amazon -- the particular model is available, but there are a lot of other options too -- but I could just go back to using my pack-basket. It's just that would be pretty miserable in the summer, since it looks like this summer is going to be scorching.

Out and About with Jigsaws -- Honeysuckle Day, 23rd of Meadow, Year 225

Summer had finally come home, as it was about 97F (36C) today, so I met [profile] ellen_fremedom, [personal profile] greenygal, [livejournal.com profile] ipleasance and A* for brunch. Afterward we went Labyrinth as I wanted to get at least one jigsaw puzzle for the jigsaw puzzle party I'm hoping to host sometime in the next few weeks.

I now have a jigsaw puzzle of art from the NASA/JPL Visions of the Future retrofuturism poster project -- the Visit Mars poster. The shop also had The Grand Tour and Kepler 16b. I also picked up the Pieter Van Den Keere World Map 1611 puzzle.

They also had three variants of the Gradient jigsaw puzzle, several gorgeous Ravensburger puzzles including the Gold Krypt, and a pretty 500-piece landscape of cherry trees against a backdrop of lake and mountains out for people to assemble. We did the easy bits -- the edges, the golden lakeshore, some of the background trees and mountains, but left the mass of pink petals for the next people to come by and get sucked into the puzzle vortex. And sadly, they didn't have any of the mass-produced Bafflers in stock; I'm going to have to order one online if I want one.

Also, there turns out there is a little book store right next door now, so we browsed for a good bit -- A* took home the hard copy of Rejected Princesses -- which was a nice respite given how hot it was out.

Then we walked up the street and looked at the vendors outside Eastern Market, but walked back down and had gelato at Pitango. They had a halvah-and-pistachio gelato that was interesting, but too heavily weighted toward sesame over pistachio for my taste, so I had cream and hazelnut before we all headed home.

Now I just have to hear back from the contracting agency about when my background check is complete and when they want me to start work...

Farmer's Market - 10 June 2017 (Chamomile Day, 22nd of Meadow, Year 225)

Smoked paprika papardelle, spinach and ricotta ravioli, lamb ragu, olive bread, spanakopita, beet green-leek-ricotta handpie, karidopita, cheese curds, Moo Mocha (chocolate milk w/ coffee -- that'll wake me up for work!), snap peas, sweet cherries (pie cherries next week!), smoked salmon and bluefish empanadas.

Employment yay! -- Cornflower Day, 21st of Meadow, Year 225

I've been offered the job! It's only a short-term contract for 3 months (replacing someone on medical leave), but it's work.

Now I just have to get the drug screen and background check done, so I might be starting as early as Tuesday.

Another day, another interview -- Pitchfork Day, 19th of Meadow, Year 225

Went on another job interview today -- not terribly exciting, but if they offer I'll take it.

Stopped at the eye-doctor on my way home to see about getting new lenses for a frame I have to make computer glasses, now that my eye-doctor wants to have either progressives or dedicated computer/reading glasses.

I'm off to the monthly contradance tonight, though who knows how long I'll stay this time.

Eyeglasses again -- Linden Day, 19th of Meadow, Year 225

What jerk decided eyeglasses are gendered?

I'm looking through the Zenni website, and what I want to know are what frames match the measurements of the glasses I own and find fit best, not whether these are "men" or "women" frames. Once I buy them, they're going to be mine.

Also, I'd like a better way to measure pupillary distance, because I can't do it with my glasses off, and I think that doing it with my glasses on will give an incorrect result.

Farmer's Market -- 3 June 2017 (Quail Day, 15th of Meadow, Year 225)

3/4 of a peck of strawberries (that's 12 dry pints -- they were half-price is you bought an entire flat, and that jam was so good, so I'm going to make lots!), garlic cheese curds, chive quark, batard of sourdough, melomakarona, tiropita, and spring ramp sauerkraut.

Currently, one on my vegetable crisper drawers is full of strawberries...

Vegan Soul Food -- Acacia Day, 14th of Meadow, Year 225

Went out with [personal profile] fabrisse to NuVegan Cafe, a vegan soul food place near Howard University, about 0.6 miles from Petworth Metro. The fried 'chicken' was excellent, some of the best fake-chicken I've had; they even had food-safe dowels as 'drumsticks'. And apparently they have the best collard greens in the city, vegan or not. The only problem I had was that the ceiling fans combined with the recessed lighting made for a dizzying strobe effect in most of the cafe.

We then walked down to T Street, to a place called Ice Cream Jubilee, where I had a single scoop of their Thai Iced Tea ice cream -- a lovely orange color and so tasty! They also make their mint chip with spearmint instead of peppermint, which is what I do when I make mint ice cream at home; it's a much more robust flavor. Apparently they will soon have a cardamon-black pepper, which I do want to try.

Eye care -- Pea Day, 13th of Meadow, Year 225

I went to my eye-doctor today, and he thinks it's time for me to get progressive, or at least separate glasses for reading/computer and distance. And while I do have frames that I could put new lenses is, I'm also concerned about price.

So, those of you who've used them ... recommend online eyeglass stores to me? I have a rather strong perscription, so it's got to be a store that can do that and sells high-refractive index lenses.

Tiny weights -- Woundwort Day, 12th of Meadow, Year 225

After meeting with [profile] hollimichele for lunch, we went browsing at one of the local thrift stores, and I picked up a set of 1 lb weights for $1.

I'm going to use them to work on some of the trickier wrist and forearm exercises, as somehow all the free weights below 20lbs are gone, except for one long 8lb dumbbell -- not quite the thing for wrist curls or trying to get the form right on lateral triceps exercises.

Contact dermatitis -- Strawberry Day, 11th of Meadow, Year 225

I think I'm sensitive to the fragrance in the blackberry soap I bought recently, since I've developed a slight rash on my chest and neck. I'm switching to an oatmeal-based soap and see if it clears up.

This is at least the second fragrance that I've wound up sensitive to -- artificial sandalwood was the first, and the third thing that makes me break out into a rash (mango skin being the worst). I hope that it's not a trend.
